“Clad in rusting steel, dramatic black stained battened plywood and nestled in the rural watershed of the Richmond ranges south of Nelson, this state of the art family eco-home explores the context of building in the landscape of the rural Waimea planes, drawing upon the textures of rustic rural buildings and rusty wool sheds to create an elegant weathering building bathed in an underbelly of light and sumptuous family living. The client’s brief called for a family home which was suitable for young children, with room for future flexibility; a home which embodied best practice eco and architectural principals, lifestyle ideals, and sustainable eco-technology within a balanced budget. The house embodies a number of prototyping firsts, eco-friendly architectural detailing and best practice sustainable passive solar design featuring, an exposed iron oxide impregnated concrete solar mass floor Code exceeding R6 roof and R3.2 wall wool insulation in overlapping layers to prevent thermal bridging Low-E argon filled thermal glazing throughout Active and passive heating and cooling transfer from the communal living regions to the bedrooms Controllable passive stack effect ventilation through roof light windows Integrated heat pump-solar -wet back powered under floor heating Solar hot water heating Unique LED Low power and low voltage task and environment lighting throughout with the provision for off grid power supply operation On site roof water detention and storage On-site waste and grey waster dispersal Recycled plastic decking Green First certified environmentally friendly Ply cabinetry and joinery low VOC finishes and absolute minimum Timber preservative treatment using Douglas Fir timber to alternative Council solution.”
